    Internship at WVEN-TV

    WVEN-TV offers internships for college students. The station remains committed to the belief that practical work experience adds realism to classroom theory and concepts. WVEN-TV views internships as a vital part of a student’s preparation for employment. Through the Internship Program, WVEN-TV invests in tomorrow’s workforce by offering challenging educational opportunities today.

    What can students gain from the program?

    The classroom setting provides an excellent forum for acquiring and analyzing information; likewise, a successful internship affords students the chance to apply what they have learned in the classroom to real life situations. As an intern at WVEN-TV, students can test their creative talent, exercise their analytical skills, and increase their understanding of broadcast operations and industry trends. In addition, through their interactions with established professionals, interns often find mentors and role models who can help to facilitate their career planning.

    In what departments are internship opportunities generally available?

    WVEN-TV internships are available in News, Production, Promotions, Public Relations & Affairs, and Sales & Marketing Research. The number of internships available in each of these departments may vary from semester to semester.

    What does WVEN-TV look for in an intern?

    Ideal candidates for WVEN-TV internships are at least 18 years old and current college students. Students majoring in a related field to the internship desired are preferred, however, students majoring in other areas will also be considered.

    When are internships available?

    Internships are available year-round. Most internships range from 3 to 6 months. Days and hours are flexible and may vary on the assignment and student schedule. ALL INTERNSHIPS ARE UNPAID AND IN EXCHANGE FOR COLLEGE CREDITS ONLY.

    How does an intern receive college credit for an internship?

    The allocation of college credit is at the discretion of your college or university. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain and complete the appropriate forms/paperwork in order to receive college credit for their internship experience. Students are also responsible for meeting any college or university registration requirements related to the internship. WVEN-TV will assist students with the completion of forms or provide information concerning the internship experience. The final authority on credits received remains with the college or university and/or its designated representatives.

    WVEN-TV recognizes that a good internship program can add practical experience to the education a student gains in college or graduate school. Therefore, the station has established an Internship Program in which students may work and earn academic credit. Interns will be closely supervised and critiqued in order to maximize the learning experience.

    Job Title: Multimedia Journalist

    MMJ Job Description:

    WVEN is looking for a Multimedia Journalist to join a newsroom that emphasizes breaking news, daily investigative/community stories and severe weather coverage.

    • We need a Multimedia Journalist who can enterprise stories by developing and fostering relationships with sources.
    • Looking for someone creative, innovative who is highly engaged in stations digital platforms (Facebook, twitter, website etc.) someone who can clearly explain the weather story, utilizing graphics and video.
    • Must be detail-oriented and exceptionally well organized, have good people skills, a positive, can-do attitude, take initiative, be a problem-solver and be able to work in a team. Ability to project a professional presence on television.
    • This position requires live reporting for our  6 and 11pm newscasts
    • Journalist will report live with a Live U unit
    • Candidate must have flexibility in his or her schedule as hours during the week will vary

    Skills:

    • Strong writer, someone with a sharp wit
    • The ability to work well with others
    • A self-starter and who can generate his or her own story ideas on a daily basis
    • Able to demonstrate enterprise reporting and creativity in story-telling
    • Exemplary communication skills

    Qualifications:

    • Candidate must be a solid photographer, quick editor and a strong writer.
    • Must be able to shoot, edit and write stories under tight deadlines and be able to respond quickly to breaking news.
    • We are looking for someone who can embrace new technology and use our digital platforms to break and update developing stories.

    Language:

    • Excellent and grammatically accurate Spanish language skills – both written and oral - required. Bilingual - fluency in English and Spanish is required. Must be able to adlib in Spanish.

    Education:

    • B.A. Degree in Journalism, Communications or other is required.
    • Two years of reporting and photography experience is required.

    Basic Skills:

    • Self-motivated, proactive with a good attitude and the ability to work well with others.
    • Technologically savvy with strong computer skills with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications; including Excel, Word, Power Point and Outlook.
    • Familiarity with technical equipment, newsroom system, smart phones, teleprompter, edit bays, cameras, and experience working with Adobe suite products a plus.
    • Must have the ability to work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays.
    • Must have a valid Florida driver’s license with a good driving record.

    Physical Requirements:

    • Ability to drive, stand, walk and sit for up to 8 hours

    Job Title: Weather Anchor/Reporter

    WVEN & WVEA seeks a weather anchor for its 6 and 11pm newscasts to cover the weather in the Orlando and Tampa Bay DMAS as well as other Entravision stations.

    1. Ideal candidate should be an excellent communicator, possess a commanding and professional on-air presence with top-notch judgement. Looking for someone creative, innovative who is highly engaged in stations digital platforms (Facebook, twitter, website etc.) someone who can clearly explain the weather story, utilizing graphics and video.
    2. Candidate must be able to produce weathercasts that stand out in a very competitive news market. Must be able to work well with producers and technical staff to craft compelling weathercasts and weather-related stories.
    3. Must be detail-oriented and exceptionally well organized, have good people skills, a positive, can-do attitude, take initiative, be a problem-solver and be able to work in a team. Ability to project a professional presence on television.

    Education:

    • College degree preferred

    Skills:

    Experience:

    • Knowledge of how to work with television equipment and production crew as well as a fundamental understanding and knowledge with video editing and production a plus.

    Language:

    • Excellent and grammatically accurate Spanish language skills – both written and oral - required. Bilingual - fluency in English and Spanish is required. Must be able to adlib in Spanish.
